Coroner’s Court Support Service
An inquest can be a distressing experience for anyone involved. The Coroner's Court support service offers emotional support and practical advice on the inquest process and members of the team are present at court for those attending in person. If you would like to speak to someone by telephone to access the service please call on Tel: 0300 111 2141 or speak to your Coroner's Officer.
The Role of a Coroner:
Coroners investigate deaths that have been reported to them if they think that the death was violent or unnatural, the cause of death is unknown, or the person died in prison or another type of state detention.
When a death is reported to a coroner, they:
- decide whether an investigation is needed; and if it is,
- investigate to establish the identity of the deceased; how, when and where they died; and any information they need to register the death; and,
- use the information discovered during the investigation to prevent other deaths.

Coroner's Officer phones are open from 9am to 1pm, Monday to Friday excluding Bank Holidays.
Coroner’s Officers work on inquest preparation between 2pm and 4pm each day. If you are Next of Kin, please email your Coroner’s Officer directly or call the telephone number provided to you, between 9am and 1pm.
